How to Care for Solid Mango Wood Furniture

Solid mango wood is a dense, durable hardwood, and with a little care it lasts for decades. This guide covers everyday cleaning, how to deal with spills and marks, and how to keep the finish looking good as the years go on.

Everyday cleaning

  • Dust once a week with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, wiping in the direction of the grain.
  • For sticky marks, use a cloth that is barely damp with plain water, then dry the surface straight away.
  • Avoid spray polishes, bleach, glass cleaner and multi-surface sprays. They can dull the finish and leave a residue that attracts dust.

Spills, heat and scratches

Spills: blot them up straight away rather than wiping, so the liquid doesn't spread or soak into the grain. Heat: always use mats under hot mugs, dishes and pans, and coasters under glasses, because heat and condensation can leave white rings. Scratches: felt pads under lamps, vases and ornaments prevent most of them. Small surface marks can often be softened by rubbing in a little furniture wax, following the grain.

Light, heat and humidity

Like all solid wood, mango wood responds to its surroundings. Keep furniture out of strong direct sunlight, which can fade or darken the finish unevenly over time. Keep it at least 30 cm from radiators, stoves and heaters, as dry heat can cause wood to shrink or crack. Try to keep rooms at a steady temperature and avoid very damp spaces. Small seasonal movement, such as a drawer that feels a little tighter in a humid summer, is normal and settles again.

Waxing and refreshing the finish

Every six to twelve months, apply a thin coat of a good-quality clear furniture wax with a soft cloth. Work with the grain, leave it for the time the wax maker recommends, then buff to a soft sheen. This feeds the wood and adds a layer of protection. Test any product on a hidden area first, such as the back or underside, to check it suits the finish.

Drawers, doors and handles

  • If a drawer starts to stick, rub a little candle wax or furniture wax along the runners.
  • Check handles and fittings every few months and tighten them gently if they loosen.
  • Don't overload drawers and shelves, and lift furniture to move it rather than dragging it.
  • Fix tall pieces such as bookcases and cabinets to the wall, especially in homes with children.

Natural character

Mango wood has a lively grain, with knots, colour changes and small natural marks. These are part of what makes each piece unique, not faults. The tone will also mellow gently over time.
